Can You Pet the Dog in GRAVHOUNDS?

No petting interaction has been confirmed in GRAVHOUNDS. You play as the dogs themselves, bio-engineered canine workers, and none of the official material mentions a pet or pat action. What the game does have is plenty of dog behaviour: howl emotes, Zane's Bark, Finn's Play Dead, the Fetch ability and a cone of shame when you go down.

Why There Is No Dog to Pet

In most games, "can you pet the dog" means a companion animal you can interact with. GRAVHOUNDS flips that idea, because every playable character is a dog. The Steam page describes them as bio-engineered canine workers built for dangerous planetary operations.

The demo roster is Selene, Zane, Dozer and Finn, all bipedal working dogs with weapons and tools. They are your crew, not pets that follow you around. Our characters guide covers what each one does.

Quick Answer at a Glance

Here is everything confirmed about dogs and animals in GRAVHOUNDS as of October 30, 2026.

  • Petting action: not confirmed.
  • Playable dogs in the demo: Selene, Zane, Dozer and Finn.
  • Emotes: howl emotes are back in the demo.
  • Dog abilities: Bark, Play Dead and Fetch.
  • Animal to look after: Coffee Cat, an escort objective you can heal.

What the Official Sources Say

We checked the Steam store page, the Xbox store page, the developer's gameplay overview, Dev Log #1 and the Demo Patch 1 notes. None of them lists a petting interaction. A dedicated search for petting or emote features also found no source confirming one.

That does not rule out a future addition. GRAVHOUNDS enters Early Access on November 2, 2026, and the developer is actively changing the game based on feedback. Until a pet action appears in the game or in official notes, the honest answer is that it is not confirmed.

Dog Interactions That Are Confirmed

The developer leans into dog humour in other ways. Dev Log #1 notes that howl emotes are back in the demo. Several character abilities are also built around dog behaviour.

  • Bark (Zane): knocks back nearby enemies and, since the demo, deals a small amount of damage.
  • Play Dead (Finn): grants invulnerability and stronger healing while you are down, then traps nearby enemies in a temporal bubble.
  • Fetch: flings objects across the battlefield to teammates; you can now fire while it is active.
  • Howl emotes: restored in the demo build according to the dev log.

The Cone of Shame and Other Jokes

When a Gravhound goes down and gets revived in the tutorial, COSMO remarks on the cone of shame. Recorded demo sessions show players making dog puns throughout, from barking at enemies to playing dead. The humour is built into the characters rather than into a separate pet.

The Steam page describes the crew as loyal, obedient and expendable. That tone runs through the whole game. You are the good dog doing a dangerous job, a long way from home.

What About Coffee Cat?

The one animal you look after is Coffee Cat, who appears as an escort objective in the demo. Players describe escorting her back to the base while waves of enemies attack. She is not a pet you interact with for fun.

Dev Log #1 says you can now heal Coffee Cat with your mining laser, and that she is tougher with better pathfinding. Healing her is part of the mission, not a petting feature. Coffee Cat and the Refinery also gained visible health displays.

Meet the Dogs You Play As

The demo roster has four Gravhounds, and each has its own personality and ability. Dozer is the tanky miner, Selene the mobile all-rounder, Finn the fragile survivor and Zane the close-range fighter. Zane is a Doberman, which one player pointed out mid-mission.

The developer calls them blue-collar working dogs lost in space and trying to find their way home. They walk upright, carry weapons and use industrial tools. Several players on the Steam forums have even asked the developer to add tails.

Dog Jokes Built Into the Game

The Steam page is full of dog humour. Fetch lets you fling objects to teammates, and a disclaimer warns that unauthorized recreational use of pipeline boost is strictly prohibited. The crew is described as loyal, obedient and expendable.

In the tutorial, COSMO jokes about the cone of shame when you are revived. Demo players pun constantly, from barking in the face of danger to playing dead. The developer clearly wants you to feel like a good dog on a bad job.

Escorting Coffee Cat

Coffee Cat is the closest the demo gets to an animal you care for. One mission asks you to escort her back to your base while the swarm attacks. A previewer described her as a heavily over-engineered coffee dispenser.

Players on the Steam forums call the Coffee Cat mission one of the harder jobs, especially solo. Repairing her during breaks between waves helps. Build turrets along the escort route before you start moving.

How We'll Keep This Answer Current

We will recheck this page after the Early Access launch on November 2, 2026. If a petting action appears in the game or in patch notes, we will update the answer and date. Until then we will not describe a feature that has not been shown.

If you find one in the game, send us a screenshot through the contact page. We prefer verified details over guesses. For the rest of the game's basics, start with our beginner tutorial.
