Why There Is No Single Best Character
The developer FAQ says Gravhounds share core mechanics and differ by traits, stats and a unique utility ability. Everyone uses the same weapons, Grav Beam and boost rig. Your choice shapes how you play rather than locking what you can do.
Training lets you raise health, movement speed, boosters and mining on any character. One previewer concluded that most playstyle differences come from turret research and Mods. Pick a dog that fits the job you want in the team.
Picks at a Glance
Quick recommendations by role, based on the demo roster.
- Solo survival: Finn.
- Close-range fighting: Zane.
- Mining and building: Dozer.
- Mobility and repairs: Selene.
- Most popular in the playtest: Zane (~30%).
Most Popular: Zane
The developer's playtest telemetry shows Zane was the most chosen character, with about 30% of players. He specialises in close-quarters combat and is the strongest at using Mods. His Bark knocks nearby enemies back on a short cooldown.
Since the demo, Bark also deals a little damage. Popularity is not proof of power, but it shows Zane is easy to enjoy. He suits players who want to fight on the front line.
Best for Solo Survival: Finn
Finn has the lowest HP of the four, which sounds bad for solo. His Play Dead ability makes up for it: Dev Log #1 says it gives invulnerability and stronger healing while you are down. When you get up, it traps nearby enemies in a temporal bubble.
Solo play has no teammates to revive you, so a built-in recovery matters. One character video calls Play Dead arguably one of the best abilities in the game. Pair Finn with turrets that can hold while you recover.
Best Miner and Builder: Dozer
Dozer has the highest HP and mining skill of any demo character. His mines explode when enemies walk over them. That makes him the natural pick for keeping the base supplied and covering approaches.
Some jobs ask for large resource totals, which previewers found slow alone. A Dozer in the team speeds those objectives up. He is a steady choice for players who prefer building to chasing kills.
Best for Mobility: Selene
Selene is an all-rounder who throws a disc a long way and flies to it. With her boost, she can stay high in the air and even reach the top of the ship. That makes her fast at repositioning and escaping danger.
Mobility helps with repairs across a spread-out base and with returning for launch. She suits players who like to scout and respond to threats. Combine her with pipeline grinding for very fast travel.
Solo Versus Co-op Picks
Solo play is slower and more methodical, according to the developer FAQ. A character who can survive alone, like Finn, or clear space up close, like Zane, helps most. Dozer suits solo jobs that need large amounts of resources.
In co-op, the enemy count scales with the team, so coverage matters more than individual power. Mixing roles lets the team mine, build and fight at once. Selene's mobility makes her a strong support for repairs across the base.
Training Changes the Picture
Any Gravhound can be upgraded through Training in the research lab. Health, movement speed, boosters, Mod cooldowns and mining efficiency are all upgradeable. A weakness at the start is not permanent.
One previewer concluded that turret research and Mods shape playstyle more than character choice. That is why we recommend picking the ability you enjoy. Then shape the rest through best builds.
Try Them All
All four Gravhounds were available from the start in the demo. Trying each one shows which ability fits your play. The developer FAQ confirms they share core mechanics, so switching is easy.
Demo progress does not carry over to Early Access, so experiment freely now. New Gravhounds can be unlocked in the full game. See character unlocks for what is confirmed.
Building a Balanced Team
The Steam page says the game is intense alone and chaotic with a crew. In co-op, mix roles so one player mines, one defends close up and one handles repairs. Different characters cover each other's weaknesses.
- Miner: Dozer keeps resources and credits flowing.
- Defender: Zane holds the line near the Collector.
- Flex: Selene repairs and responds across the map.
- Survivor: Finn anchors risky objectives.
