GRAVHOUNDS Characters: Selene, Zane, Dozer and Finn Explained

The GRAVHOUNDS demo has four playable characters: Selene, Zane, Dozer and Finn. All share the same core kit, and each differs by stats, traits and one unique utility ability. Dozer is the tanky miner, Selene the mobile all-rounder, Finn the fragile survivor with Play Dead, and Zane the close-range fighter with Bark.

How Characters Work

The developer FAQ says playable Gravhounds share core mechanics and differ through traits, stats and a unique utility ability. The game is not class-based. Every dog carries the Grav Beam, mining laser, boost rig and weapons.

The Steam page describes the crew as bio-engineered canine workers built for dangerous planetary operations. It encourages you to combine each Gravhound's strengths to beat back the swarm. Training can also raise any character's stats over time.

Roster at a Glance

The four demo Gravhounds and their key traits.

  • Dozer: most HP, best miner, buried mines.
  • Selene: all-rounder, long throw and flight.
  • Finn: least HP, Play Dead.
  • Zane: close range, strongest with Mods, Bark.

The Demo Roster at a Glance

The official demo announcement names four Gravhounds. Roles below come from a character breakdown video and match other hands-on footage.

  • Dozer: highest HP and best mining; places mines underground that explode when enemies walk over them.
  • Selene: all-rounder; throws a disc a long way and flies to it.
  • Finn: lowest HP; Play Dead heals him and traps nearby enemies.
  • Zane: strongest with Mods and close-quarters combat; Bark knocks enemies back.

Dozer: The Heavy Miner

Dozer has the highest HP and mining skill of any demo character. His ability places mines underground, which explode when enemies walk over them. That makes him good at holding routes into your base.

Mining speed matters in jobs that ask for large resource totals. One previewer found a solo resource job slow, which is where Dozer's strength shows. He suits players who want to keep the operation supplied.

Selene: The Mobile All-Rounder

Selene is described as an all-rounder. She can throw a frisbee-style disc a massive distance and then fly to it, as if gravity barely applies. Combined with her boost, she can stay high in the air.

The breakdown video notes she can even reach the top of your ship, where she is essentially out of reach of damage. That makes her the quickest way to escape a bad position. She suits scouting and fast repositioning.

Finn: Play Dead Specialist

Finn has by far the lowest HP of the four. His Play Dead ability lets him recover health while also trapping nearby enemies. One video calls it arguably one of the best abilities in the game.

Dev Log #1 reworked Play Dead for team play. It now provides invulnerability and stronger healing while you are down, then traps nearby enemies in a temporal bubble when you get up. That turns a near-death moment into a counterattack.

Zane: Close-Range Fighter

Zane specialises in close-quarters combat and is the strongest at using Mods. His Bark ability knocks back nearby enemies on a short cooldown. Since the demo, Bark also deals a small amount of damage.

Zane is a Doberman, as one player joked during a demo session. He was the most popular pick in the playtest, chosen by about 30% of players. One creator paired him with a shotgun to bark enemies into the air and shoot them.

Shared Tools Every Gravhound Uses

Every character carries the Grav Beam for grabbing, hauling and throwing. The mining laser mines resources and repairs structures. The boost rig lets everyone dash, jump, hover and grind on powered pipelines.

Dev Log #1 made the ground dash free to use. Grenades and the Fetch ability are also available. That shared kit is why the developer says the game is not class-based.

Character Ability Changes in the Demo

Dev Log #1 changed several abilities based on playtest feedback. These notes are the most reliable description of how abilities behave now.

  • Play Dead: reworked for team play with invulnerability, stronger healing and a temporal bubble.
  • Bark: now deals a small amount of damage alongside its knockback.
  • Fetch: movement fixes, and you can fire while it is active.
  • Free ground dash: no longer has a cost to use.

Player Feedback on Character Design

Character design has been a lively topic on the Steam forums. Several threads ask the developer to give the dogs tails and paws. Others debate the art style.

The developer has not announced design changes in response. Feedback channels are the official Discord and Steam discussions. We will note any official changes after Early Access launches.

More Gravhounds Later

The Steam page says you can unlock new Gravhounds as you progress. The demo shows only these four, and the full Early Access roster has not been announced. Our character unlocks guide tracks what is confirmed.
